The Differences Between Altruism and Selfishness

Rand views altruism and selfishness very differently than I think in conventional society. To be selfish is to seek out values that promote your life. Be selfish doesn't mean just doing things that make you feel good. It's not selfish to do cocaine because their long-term consequences are bad. So giving charity could be bad for you, non-selfish. It might be selfish. But to qualify as selfish, you have to be able to go through a rational explanation why it's good for you.
