The Ghost of 19 68
Several million people were on strike, making this the largest social movement in the history of france. President de gaul and his government were at a loss as to how to restore order. The events of 19 68 have haunted the political class in France ever since. Workers with highly favorable terms and conditions of employment exploited these fears to great effect. This is particularly true for those whose job also gives them the capacity to create havoc by striking.
