The Matter of Britain
The Matter of Britain is the whole of the Arthurian tradition, which was a source that people could draw on for courtly romances. It comes out as a term in the 14th century, but it's referred to quite frequently as a distinct body of law. And I mean, this is basically where all of the romances come from. But the stories go back much earlier. We have evidence of 8th and 9th century, not much before that.
