The Eternity of the Universe

Maimonides is convinced that the universe is not eternal, and he doesn't need scripture to reach this conviction. He points out that there are many apparently permanent features of the universe that seem to be unnecessary. As far as we can tell, the world looks very much as if it was created by arbitrary, unconstrained divine will rather than by a God who was following some kind of iron-clad law of necessity.
