Wolf's First Paragraphs
Wolf: I have a number of things I want to cover in this first paragraph as typical of first paragraphs by Wolf. That's all we get about the gate. We never learn what caused the riot. This is a huge point of frustration within readers because that comes so suddenly at the end of shadow. And then the end comes so suddenly following it, it feels heightened importance. Saverian directly compares himself in the first paragraph with the inquiry here and ignoring her words, but instead seeing his mind to people writhing in pain. So in his dream, Saverian has accepted a truth of events.
