Microsoft's Direct Storage 1.2 Enhances Support for Legacy Hard Drives
Microsoft has rolled out version 1.2 of its Direct Storage SDK, enhancing support for the old spinning disks, hard drives. Now this feature introduced in version 11 delegates asset decompression into the graphics card rather than the CPU with big name tech companies like NVIDIA AMD and Intel ready to back Direct Storage's latest GPU decompression techniques. As Microsoft Direct X team explains, legacy hard drives require buffered IO to offset those long drawn out seek times by enabling this mode.
