LZ Granderson: We're more accustomed to thinking about the question of slavery, good or bad. And questions associated with western expansion for the pre-Civil War period. He says there was a big debate about the status and rights of free African Americans in that period. LZ: I kind of ended up getting led back further and further in time and into the states because that's where the answers turned out to be.
