The Invisible Hand Argument for the State
Nozick wants a market-based invisible hand explanation for the state. We have states not because at one big-band moment we decided to trade away our rights, he says. He doesn't like the idea that the creation of the state is a conscious or self-conscious act. That's how markets work: Markets are sites of decision-making where outcomes can be for everyone's benefit or for everyone's harm.
