In December 1936 Ethel and Julius met at a New Year's Eve benefit for a local union while she was waiting to go on stage to sing. In 1939 Julius graduated from college with a degree in electrical engineering and the couple got married that June. The following year Julius joined the US Army Signal Corps as a civilian engineer He worked at a laboratory at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey His employers were unaware of his communist affiliations Then in June 1941 Hitler invaded the Soviet Union and Ethel started working full time as a volunteer raising funds to help the Soviet people Just a few months later though on December 7th the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II  the Soviets maintained a sprawling
