The proximal tubule moves a massive amount of bicarbonate. And now we're in the distal nephron and we have a much smaller task instead of 4,000 milli-cal once that needs to be reabsorbed. The potassium hydrogen exchanger seems to be more important for combating hypokalemia rather than maintaining acid-based status.
