One of the things that I thought was really well played and well written was the starry-eyed 17 year old Anjalu who is looking to become a journalist like Hildi, the protagonist. The way that Varley writes the book is she's 17 and incredibly irritating to the protagonist. To us she's just, you know, bride-eyed and wants to help out and everything.
