The Importance of Persuasion in Language
Habermas argues that if you're actually trying to cause an effect in the world, that that is pursuing instrumental reason. He says there's a difference between persuasion and manipulation. When people do things because of what you say, that's a perilocutionary effect. The speaker cannot intend the aim of reaching understanding as something that is to be brought about causally.
