Dostoevsky's Poetics - The Epilogue
The epilogue is a monophonic intrusion in a polyphonic world, Dostoevsky's poetry is polyphonic. The number nine is significant and why does the three distinct phases of crime and punishment happen in nine month batches? You don't really realise this until you get to the epilogue because you're meant to feel fever and disoriented. To me personally though you might disagree it feels almost like a Deus X machena, a God in the machine. We think that the narrative, the art has failed because we don't want just random chance or fortune or luck.
