Mariel McCullough interviewed her father, a Memphis police officer. She says he never set out to have a career in law enforcement. He joined up with the Army because it was his only realistic way out of poverty. After being discharged from the military, he struggled to find work and ended up taking on manual labor jobs. "I think that's pretty much what the situation was."
