Levi Strauss started donating money almost as soon as he started making money after he moved to California. He was a vocal supporter of the Hawaiian has a pro sity treaty of 1875 which removed tariffs on goods traded between the Kingdom of Hawaii and the US. One of Strauss's employees named Henry Richmond later wrote of him quote, Mr Strauss was very quiet, affable, always immaculately dressed.
