The Prime Ministers We Never Had
Dennis Healy would have been a very effective presidential figure. Ken Clark commanded a range of support beyond party bounds that presidents have to do in the U.S. But we are party based and this is another clue as to why the prime ministers we never had didn't become prime minister. You have to be at one with your party. There has to be a dance with your party that is harmonious at a point. And so let's take two of those people I mentioned, Dennis Healy and Ken Clark. The same with Hesseltine, he made his bid in 1990, finally challenging Margaret Thatcher.
