Jay Parini: As far as I'm concerned, there's really no good definition. If you have two negative consecutive quarters of GDP, that's a recession. He says even over just the last 20 years, there have been two situations where 2001 didn't see two negative quarters of GDP and 2008 did not start until end of 2008. But now is actually worse than things were a year ago when we saw those twonegative quarters of GDP," he adds.
