William Hurst bought the New York Morning Journal for $150,000. The consensus of the newspaper men in New York was that Hurst had bought a lemon. He brought some of his best reporters and writers from San Francisco to work with him. But he quickly looks at the situation and says, okay, I have to differentiate myself.
