It makes sense to me that someone wouldn't think to write down the basic obvious facts that contextualize the specific story they were telling and explain. Because it was an oral tradition, as different people are telling these stories and passing on this information, they'll leave out stuff that they don't like. And there's a science word where you have gaps between pieces of data and you figure out what should bridge the gap. It starts with interpolate, that's what it is. You'll like interpolate the data.
