Python already had a syntax for annotations we just didn't know what to use them for yet. There was no there was no syntax for defining generics directly syntactically in the language. A preprocessor model doesn't work very well with the typical workflow of Python development projects. That's funny I mean that could have been another major split if it became successful. If you watch TypeScript versus JavaScript it's like a split in the community over types right? That seems to be stabilizing now.
