Is There a Bipartisan Consensus on Guns in Canada?
There isn't a huge necessarily reason to update Canada's gun laws from what they were in the 1990s. The problem with gun policy today is that both of Canada's major political parties have really lucrative partisan incentives for making this a political issue. This wasn't sort of the divisive political issue that it is today. What we saw at first under the Harper government, which was really successful at using the long gun registry as a wedge issue. We saw it sort of start under Harper, but Trudeau has really kind of taken it to the next level.
