In the time of polio, when the salk faccine came out, it would have been unimaginable to meet this kind of politicized vaccine resistance. The people who invented the sabin and salk were widely hailed as heroes. And the public lined up to get vaccinated. They were afraid of polio, of course, but they also saw it as a normal, civic thing to do.
