In lots of studies, you're equally likely to get the drug as the placebo. Anup looked at data from a bunch of clinical trials for drugs that targeted stomach ulcers and that had different treatment shares. In some trials, patients knew they either had a 50 % chance of getting the active treatment, or they would all get the active treatment because the trial didn't include a placebo control group. The fact was driven by their higher expectations they'd get the drug instead of a placibo. If we expect the drug to work, it may work better.
