Rhode Island changed its code after the station fire. It ditched a grandfather clause that exempted old buildings from modern safety requirements like sprinklers. 85% of fatal fires happen not in a nightclub or an office building or a school, but at home. More than half of all fatal fires in the US have exactly one fatality.
