Edith and harold were among a group of city leaders whose spear headed efforts to create an pera company in chicago. In edith's own words, it is only the cities which have reached a certain cultural height which have opera. From my point of view, opera is a proof of culture, and there rnot to be considered as a luxury, but to be recognized as a biological necessity,. For human development is measured by culture. Where there is no culture, there is no actual development.
