Hundreds of corpses stood in place where they had died. They were stiff and desiccated, mummified by some process that rendered their flesh like tightly packed ash. Bernadette says she was sure that nothing had moved in that dead city for a hundred years. She was mistaken. I have never envied you your position, Gertrude. I know the terrible costs that come with them. But honestly, trying to get a description of these things, these inheritors from Bernadette Del Curre made me wish I could just pull the image from her lips like you would have been able to.
