The Relationship Between Tension and Regret
The relationship between temptation and regret is complicated, especially the cases involving rationally cyclic preferences. Side-stepping temptation via leg-based satisficing can still generate another sort of regret - mourning the loss of a foregone good. And so acting promptly enough will always be somewhat arbitrary,. leaving the agent with the kind of recognition that a single further indulgence would not have been make or break with respect to his long term goal.
