When I hear a could you, I'll immediately say yes. And then over the next 10 minutes, I will realize why I'm not going to do it and then ignore the question. So for this, I read a book called The Myth of Mars and Venus by Deborah Cameron which was really interesting. She describes what's going on here as tactical misunderstanding. We all deliberately speak in ways that are not congruent with the literal meaning of our words.
