The History of Kahokia

Monk's mound is among a site of dozens of smaller mounds, collectively called kahokia. Projectile points and other artifects have been excavated at this site which demonstrate that there is likely to have been a settlement here from around the year 600 or 700. The settlement was probably successfully supporting a growing population who would have been cultivating maize,. with maize being a staple crop of mississippian peoples. In general, the peoples would have constructed pit houses on sunken bases - not unlike the kind of basic houses created by the first semi nomadic societies in japan.
