Theories generally do is that they ignore the weirdness of dreams where they say that that is a side effect or even more broadly that the experiences of the dreams are like a byproduct of something else. I don't find those sort of accounts convincing. My suspicion is that dreams, the effect of dreams at preventing overfitting and ensuring cognitive function are cumulative.
