The Spanish Golden Age
During the Spanish Golden Age, much of Spain's wealth came from control of lucrative gold and silver mines in the Americas. When they did try to centralize authority and increase revenues, several parts of the empire revolted. By the 1650s, Spanish power was collapsing. In 1700, the last of the ruling Spanish-Habsburg dynasty died; his will named a member of the French-Borbon dynasty as a successor.
