Other People’s Money: George Saunders on the Value of Failure

Against the Rules with Michael Lewis

CHAPTER

The Queen Mother and the Corgis

I was in a Dickens phase when I was writing this. There are two things I was reading. Education by Henry Adams, Rousseau's Convections. It reeks of Dickens. It's like I'm a young man looking for a position. But you can see the prose in this chapter smells. I would never write anything like this now. The English think corgis are cute. They never go anywhere without them. And George Saunders and I talked about this a lot. Just rewind the tape a little bit for me and explain to me how you even get the idea that you want to be a writer. Can we do that? Yes.
