Is There a Welfare State or an Open Border?

You can either have a an open border, or you can have a welfare state. But you can't have both, because if you have an open border and you have aelfare state, then you open yourself up to people taking advantage of those programmes excessively. So as long as you can having a welfare state, you have to have strict restrictions on immigration. People are angry about the idea that something is being taken from them and given to some one else. And responsibility is now a vice rather than a virtue. I think this is one of the big issues that is fundamentally bubbling and causing massive division among the American citizenry.
