Lyndon johnson signed the voting rights act of 19 65. Five nights later, a d u i stop of a black man in los angeles that got physical exploded into the worst urban violence since the draft riots of the civil war. People watched crowds of civ civilian setting buildings on fire and then attacking firefighters who tried to put out the flames. There had been plenty of racial violence before this year but nobody was prepared for the scale of rioting when it happened. More than once people were forced to flee from the scene because it was taking arms from the ground due to small-arms fire.
