Lito was a tightness, whose iconography suggests that she was a goddess who promoted modesty in young girls. The veil may have stood as a symbol of the passage from the darkness, meaning the womb, into the light, meaning the world. Hera dogged and harassed Lito all over the earth, denying her refuge and aid in childbirth on any part of the land. But the barren, floating island of Delos, which at that point was not attached to the ocean floor, gave Lito a refuge. And so Lito gave birth to the twins Artemis and Apollo,. with Artemis being born first, and then becoming her mother's midwife, and assisting Elethea with the birth
