Alfred did that job for almost two years and then he got lucky. Because of scarcity of guys who could speak fluent English and who could write and read, I was reassigned and given responsibilities. The last job I was earning around 4,500 a cutlery house. $1,500. That was pretty good money. A friend of mine saw the competence in me and he actually paid full school fees for me to go and study the occupational and safety and health.

The people who built Qatar’s stadiums, hotels, and transit systems were employed under the country’s exploitative migrant worker system. Officials promised things would change before the World Cup, but a one-time worker says it’s only better on paper.
