Orwell was not alone in thinking that the Second World War had changed the conditions of democratic politics. The war had required so much centralized state control that there was no going back, he said. class structures of English life were swept away and British state did become more meritocratic but it certainly became much more centrally organized. All other take on that is that it had to be channeled in the direction of democratic socialism from 1945 to 1950-51 according to Orwell.
