The bendes were founding members of chartr 77, the main shekel slavoc disident community. Charter 77 was a 19 77 document signed by over 200 artists, intellectuals and others demanding that the communist regime respect human rights. Some of its signatories, including the playwright and future president voslav hovell and voslav benda, landed in prison for their advocacy. The artist personalities aren't really good at joining groupsas we chafe at boundaries because we're always curious.
