In 19 79, the united states cut off formal diplomatic relations with tiwan. But then congress passed the tiwan relations act. And real question is whether that policy is now dated. The presumption all along was that as china developed, it would actually begin to look more like tiwan. Under president g it has become more prosperous and more autocratic.
