The Unpredictability of the NPFL
Many fighters were deciduous in killing people of their own ethnic group, or because they regarded anyone who had lived in Monrovia for too long as having betrayed the moral values of the village. One witness claimed to have witnessed another rebel emptying a sack full of severed penises on the ground in front of his commander. The way for a Monrovia to survive a checkpoint was to dress poorly, look as inconspicuous as possible and pray to God. Many of these NPFL irregulars were adolescents having an adventure, at least at the start of the war. They were not professional killers like the AFL, which was systematically slaughtering suspected opponents throughout the first months of 1990.
