Hume's treatise should be understood as the jewel in the crown of the radical enlightenment, says Paul Russell. The irreligious interpretation that I'm explaining right now tends to say Thomas Hobbes and Spinoza are atheistic figures. It's really about attacking the ambitions of Christian metaphysics and morals and replacing it with a secular scientific account of ethics and ethical life.
