TALKING POLITICS

CHAPTER

British History - Is There a History of the Union?

Boris Johnson and Jacob Riese-Mogg are emblematic here in that as far as I can see neither of them really knows much history. There is an ongoing story about Englishness but it's not very political so if you look in the 19th century and the Victorian times we're in the union there's a great deal of interest in cultural Englishness. What we don't see really until we move into the period of devolution for Scotland and Wales is more explicitly political articulations of what English nationhood means. The politics of Englishness is always tied up with party politics because the conservatives are the dominant party in England.
