The Relationship Between Curiousness and Productivity in Early Modern Science

The ancient and medieval view of curiosity was that it produced useless knowledge. In the early modern period, right as early modern science is really starting to take off, we think about this as the root of science. But I think we flipped too quickly. We kind of gave into a binary choice too easily here. And so there's tension between different time scales or different spatial scales and systems in how we make time for play.
