The Importance of Respect
I empathised with so much of what she was saying. All performers crave respect for what they're doing, it's natural. She wanted so much to be a classical pianist because she knew she would getrespect. And when she first started her life as a jazz artist, she didn't get any respect. You have this great fantasy about someone who would have come in and overturned the classical establishment. But I don't know if that's the case,. Because what you encounter is a lot of patronizing attitudes. The best artists are very difficult to categorize - they always stay a step ahead. They keep on developing. That's why Nina Simone pushes herself even further than anyone else.
