All three assume charles would conti to be king, because nobody, except for maybe henry martin, thought that the first civil war had been about abolishing monarchy or even deposing the current king. Charles, for his part, planned to play these three factions off one another to get the best deal that he could. But he just didn't seem capable of making the compromises that each faction needed him to make to secure any deal at all, let alone the best deal. And when he steadfastly refused their terms, taks broke down as duck king charles charles's intransigons only drove the scots into a deeper alliance with the presbyterians.
