The podcast takes a hard stance against coal miners. The company provided the wife of a stricken miner with what was known as Esau's script. This was a special type of script currency only usable for food and other necessities. At the time, most coal miners wives did not hold jobs, but they still had to pay back the loan. And the women themselves were the collateral. Their physical selves would be used to pay the debt.
