What Is the Clean Living Move?

In the 18 hundreds, something emerged in culture called the clean living move. It was a response to the slums of the likes of new york. The people comming from ireland were escaping famine and had been through several generations of penal laws. This manifested itself into the protestant, middle upper class american mind set as this moral panic. And also, what you have there is these, these people who wanted to start their utopian communities. They would have been quite horrified as well. So how does something like that happen?
