Understanding Is the Capacity to Create Explanatory Knowledge
We have instincts, but we routinely are able to go against our instincts. An animal is not able to violate its own instincts because that requires an understanding. Understanding is the capacity to create explanatory knowledge. And it's unpredictable inherently, because we're creative.
