Is There a Higher Sensation of Humanity?
The catechism says white slave owners loved and cared for their slaves. So the message they were basically sending was that self interest would have promoted good treatment if a higher feeling of humanity had not. The monuments are there, certainly to send a message to african americans in the community about who's still in charge of society,. but they're also there to train the next generation of white children into how to think about this hierarchy in society.
