The cosmic micro background tells us a lot about the conditions for the early universe. It confirms things like dark matter, dark energy. Yet hawkings says it's the greatest discovery of the century, if not of all time. A lot of th questions about what the universe is made out of and how it came to be come from understanding that in great detail.
